WHO
IS DEREK
THE WIZZ MURPHY
Basketball – that unique medley
of eye, hand, and mind that works wonders with a hide-covered ball to the
background of cheers and the hectic shriek of tennis sneakers on a polished,
hardwood floor Man and Ball in a spilt-second ballet of motion that defies the
laws of physics. This is exhibition basketball today a fast-paced, highly
competitive sport that puts man against man, and man against himself.
In all the exhibition games
played on open fields under a blinding Arizona sun or the cool, clinical lights
of a modern amphitheater, there has been no greater school for study than the
Harlem Globetrotters. He played to the frantic, quick-paced rhythms of “Sweet
Georgia Brown.” Modern wizards of the art of ball playing, Meadowlark Lemon,
Derek “Wizz” Murphy, Fred “Curly” Neal, and Nate Branch have fashioned a
whirlpool of fast-paced, spirited action that suspends time itself in a
kaleidoscopic display of fire and movement. From this high-temperature crucible
of basketball storm and stress, Derek Murphy has come forth, a fire-tried
veteran, seeking new worlds to conquer.
Seeking more than just a
teakwood floor to be his platform, Derek Murphy has come from the Globetrotters
with a mission. His mission? To bring those who could not get to a Globetrotters
game (or who could not afford it) the message that is beneath the ruffles and
flourishes of Globetrotter artistry. This is that sports are open to all,
colorblind and free, and that the dedication and sheer pleasure of a hard job
done well are central to life today as much as it was in the days of Knute
Rockae, Jessie Owens, and Jim Thrope.
Derek Murphy is a sports star
highly evolved a sports veteran of consummate skill and civic pride in his
hometown of Philadelphia and in his country at large. A veteran of
motion-picture films and high- energy hardwood floors, Derek Murphy travels the
country with a Woody Guthrie message that this land is your land mine and your
talents well.
